Water/Wastewater Treatment Operator

Job Title: Water/Wastewater Treatment Operator

Salary Range: $10.48 - $14.40 per hour, depending upon qualifications.

Full Time Position: Yes

Job Description: The Water/Wastewater Treatment Operator is responsible for the daily operation, maintenance, and repair of the water/wastewater treatment facilities. The Operator’s general objective is to supply the City with clean and safe drinking water and sanitary waste disposal.

Essential Functions:
• Performs daily laboratory tests on source water and treated water;
• Makes treatment technique adjustments based on lab results;
• Keeps accurate records of treatment and lab results;
• Troubleshoots malfunctions in equipment and makes the necessary repairs;
• Operates various types of chemical feeding equipment;
• Handles a variety of hazardous chemicals used in the treatment process;
• Performs daily maintenance in and around treatment facilities;


Minimum Qualifications: The employee is expected to have a high school diploma or equivalent and a good driving record. Applicants must be 21 years of age and have no criminal history. The employee is expected to have gained the necessary knowledge to perform the job reasonably well within six (6) months of hiring.

In addition to the minimum education requirements listed above, the Operator is expected to be able to operate digital lab testing equipment, chemical feeds and pumps, and various power tools including riding mowers, weed eaters, etc.

Manual labor is a requirement for this position. Heavy lifting, bending, kneeling, crawling and climbing accompany the Operator’s daily duties. The Operator must also be able to follow verbal and/or written instructions from supervisors, interpret lab test results and make appropriate plant adjustments. Additionally, the ability to follow manufacturer’s instructions, manuals, etc. is helpful.

Cemetery Sexton/Parks Foreman

Job Description: Under the supervision of the Public Works Director, the Cemetery Sexton/Parks Foreman is an exempt position under FLSA which performs administrative and skilled duties in the maintenance and operation of the City’s cemetery and parks. This position is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the cemetery, preparing graves for funerals, and supervising seasonal personnel. The employee should possess a strong mechanical aptitude, and excellent communication, organizational, supervisory and public relation skills.

Essential Functions: Maintains cemetery data and assists the public in locating plots; responsible for all burials; clears the cemetery of all brush and trash; cleans cemetery plots and grave sites, mows and weed eats as necessary; prepares and maintains records and reports with accuracy; oversees maintenance of department machinery and equipment; plants or removes trees and shrubs as needed; prunes trees and shrubs; maintains cemetery and parks trees, shrubs and plants; applies chemicals for weed control, fertilizer for city owned lawns; prepares, maintains and cares for flower beds on Main Street; maintains/repairs playground equipment; on a daily basis patrols cemetery, parks and public areas including the Civic Center; ensures that the Civic Center is clean and opened/closed when needed; follows department policies and procedures; follows safety procedures and practices; supervises seasonal employees; prepares budget estimates and controls expenditures of all Cemetery and Parks funds; prepares payroll reports;

Marginal Functions: Assists other organizations and departments with Memorial Day activities; maintains parks for special events; repairs and straightens broken or leaning markers; operates equipment such as loaders, mowers, trimmers, and backhoes; assists with the City’s Spring and/or Fall Cleanup;

Experience: One to three years of similar or related experience is required. Employee is expected to have acquired the necessary information and skills to perform the job reasonably well within one year of employment.

Minimum Qualifications: The employee is expected to have at a minimum, a high school diploma, or GED. A technical degree in horticulture or landscaping preferable, but not required. This employee must possess a valid Kansas Driver’s License.

Technical Skills: Thorough knowledge of records and cemetery procedures is necessary. Must have the ability to take the necessary time to do the job right the first time. No place for mistakes in burials. Have thorough knowledge of equipment to maintain parks and cemetery including knowledge of herbicides and insecticides. Good communication skills are necessary to convey detailed and important instructions to other workers and the general public. Ability to operate a variety of equipment including backhoes, mowers, trimmers, and other department equipment is necessary. Employee must have operating knowledge of office equipment as well.

Working conditions: Manual labor is expected of the employee in this position. Much of the work occurs outside and the employee is therefore exposed to all weather elements. The employee must be able to work effectively in these conditions. Heights, excessive noise and contact with hazardous chemicals also accompany this position.

Physical Requirements: Manual labor includes lifting and carrying heavy objects, bending, kneeling, climbing, extensive walking and the ability to operate department equipment. The ability to express or exchange ideas by means of verbal communication to other works and the general public is required.
